Unwanted package
3 weeks ago I recieved a package for a person who lived in my apartment long before me. It is from a mail order company and about a half square meter.
I have contacted the company and they suggested that I bring it to them, of course I said no chance and they should pick it up. To this they said that they would contact the customer and "see if they can arrange something".
Now over two weeks after this there is still no word from them or the customer. I wrote an email last Thursday and asked them again to come and get it but still have no response.
Can I just chuck it away? I know in England these companys have a time limit to colllect these things befoer I have the right to chuck it.
Any Ideas?

If the package wasn't for you why did you accept it when it was delivered?
If you didn't sign for it I would toss it! As they can't prove you ever had it. If you did sign for it send the company a registered letter in the mail stating a deadline to pick it up or else it will be tossed.

What's in the package? Open it up and see before you throw it away - might be something cool.

hmm, interesting problem. I guess you had to sign for it when it arrived? Typically it is illegal to open someone else's mail without permission.
So you may be 'responsible' for it in that you signed it into your possension, without being able to open, own or destroy it because it is a mail package.
Really the company or previous tennant should come and collect it; it is their collective failure - so you've done the right thing in informing them - but I would suggest you store it for a while and don't throw it out. That could cause you more problems than it's worth.

You could always just bring it back to the post office...

I signed for it as my flatmate was expecting a package on that very same day (which has still not arrived). Its was only later that we realised that it was not for us. I admit that I should of checked but was in a hurry.
In regards to whats in it, its bed clothes and pillows. I have checked the website of this company and they sell cheap sheets etc etc..
I have just sent an email instructing that they should collect in in the next three working days or I will chuck it, or maybe there will be a new post in the "for sale" section.

In this case, if you can manage, bring it to a post office, return to sender. This can be done without payment.
Keep the receit for proof!
