Any Big Departament store in Vienna?

Postby lceccar » Tue May 15, 2012 10:07 pm

Hi,

I am moving from Germany to Vienna in July and from my first and only trip there for house hunt I could not find a department store where you can buy almost anything: cosmetics, clothes, toys, pots and pans etc like they have here in Germany. Famous ones here are KaDeWe and Galleria Kaufhof. Is there anything similar in Vienna?

Try Gerngross in Mariahilferstrasse - not on the same scale as KaDeWe but should do the job. otherwise try a shopping centre like Donauzentrum.
I have a near-fatal aversion to neediness and tree-hugging. Anon.

Also in the city:
Galleria on Landstrasse Hauptstrasse in the 3rd
Ringstrasse Gallerien, on Kärntner Ring in the 1st
Gasometer, also in the 3rd by Gasometer
Einkaufzentrum Simmering, on Simmering Hauptstrasse in the 11th
The new Bahnhofcity at Westbahnhoff in the 15th

...probably a few more I haven't recalled.

Shopping City Sud & Shopping City Nord, and Gewerbepark Stadlau for heading a little further afield.

Once upon a time Vienna had a large number of department stores: Herzmansky, Gerngross, Stefan Esders, Stafa, to name a few. Whereas in Germany more or less all the traditional department stores merged into a few groups (Galeria Kaufhof, Karstadt, KaDeWe), in Vienna they never really recovered after WW2, and then shopping centres such as those listed in this thread stole their thunder.

Gerngross (on the site of the original department store of that name) is the closest you will get, and should pretty much have what you want under one roof.

Interestingly, you are more likely to find real department stores in some of the other Austrian cities, e.g. Kastner & Oehler in Graz.

Lugner City in the 15th district - mainly a mall, like those mentioned above.

Steffl is a high-end department store, but I'm not sure if you can get pots and pans. For home stuff you can go to Leiner, Kika, Lutz or Ikea
