New Glasses
So I am in desperate need of new eye glasses, but I have only ever gotten them in the US. Unfortunately I can't wait until my next trip. So I was wondering if anyone could recommend a glasses store. I have walked by Fielmann and Perle before, but have only been in to have my glasses adjusted.
Furthermore, does anyone have any experience with the WGKK covering part of the cost of new glasses. I remember somebody mentioning that they do if your glasses prescription is bad enough (as mine certainly is), but I can't seem to find much information on this.
Thanks for any help!

Re: New Glasses
My missus usually goes to the Fielmann on Mariahilfestrasse (by U3 Neubaugasse) and she is happy with their service; perhaps not the cheapest but they have a wide selection and take time and care with the fitting.
I don't think she has ever got any money back from the KK though.

Re: New Glasses
I went to a wonderful shop in the 3rd district to get my glasses. Not part of a chain, just a small, old, little shop with a great selection of frames. The lady really knows her trade, and will find you glasses that will go with your face/look. I loved her. But, most of the frames are brands, and might not be as cheap as the Pearle or Fielman frames. To me it was more important that someone took the time to find me a nice frame, than to save myself money.
If only I could remember the name of the shop... I will do a search on herold
Edit: here you go.

PK It is a long way from your neighborhood, however there is Binder on Sieveringerstrasse. We have been very happy with the service.
Perle was not our fav over here. Also their prices were comparable to Binder w/o the service.

Yes, chefsmith. We people from the 2nd district are so happy with our district that we dont fear pointing out good things from other districts.

Re: New Glasses
I got mine from Niebauer Optik - http://members.aon.at/niebauer/ in the 5th district (Wiedner Hauptstrasse 90) - they weren't cheap but they were very quick and service was good. Think the Krankenkassa only pays out lenses if you have a "Bildschirmarbeitsplatz"

Re: New Glasses
There's a place near Rochusgasse in the 3rd district that is part of a chain (I forget the name) that is nice. My neighbor used to work there but they only carry brand names.
Pearle is one of the most expensive in Vienna, they don't have very cheap frames.
Fielmann is the best place to look. The staff is very friendly and if you're going to the one on Mariahilferstraße, they have an excellent selection. Any frame you find that you like but the color is wrong or so, they'll often be able to order the color you prefer (I'm talking about the more plastic frames) and have it in the store within 24 hours (if not same-day if you go in really early) for you to see. My girlfriend bought her first pair here and I was shocked at how nice of an experience it was.
In addition to Fielmann's wide selection they also have a very wide price range. My girlfriend got a cheaper frame (about €40) and bought the best lenses they had. IIRC, they have about 4 different lenses to choose from at nice price points, so if you really don't want to spend a lot, you can walk out with glasses that are really cheap (say as an emergency pair). They also helped my girlfriend get a brand new frame after hers broke just out of warranty (kid decided headbutting would be cool) and they replaced them free of charge (they were the house brand, again - cheaper).
