District Recommendations

District Recommendations

Postby extramedium » Sun Jul 22, 2012 3:14 pm

Hi Everyone. As someone who is moving to Vienna soon (and waited way too long to start the moving process) I really appreciate this nice site and the forums.

I'm a 29 year old American male moving to Vienna in mid August for a research position. I would like to live in a safe, but fun area with bars and restaurants nearby. I'll be working in the 3rd district, but it seems easy enough to get around the city with the Underground, etc., so my primary desire in living is to be in a safe and cool area. I'll have the second half of August to find a rental before I begin working in the lab. I see a number of nice threads in the forums concerning district preferences, etc., but most of what I see are discussions from years ago. I know these types of preferences can change in a short period of time.

I'm hoping that some of you nice people could recommend a district or two for me based on my preferences. I see that finding a place to rent in Vienna can be difficult, so any help narrowing my search would really be appreciated.

Thanks for all of the help. I hope to see many of you at a meet up once I arrive in Vienna.

Short answer: I would suggest to aim for the 6th, 7th and 8th if you want fun, inner city life (everywhere is safe in Vienna! there is no 'hood), or the 2nd and 3rd district if you want inner city life and greenery-park space.

Prices for a nice, reasonable inner city apartment, say 75m2 to 100m2 (800 to 1100 squ. foot), two bedroom are €800-1200, for reference. I would suggest to look for an old building.

Websites and other advice are in the same threads as you have been reading, even from a few years ago most things are still accurate.

You want to live near either the U3 Zieglergasse or Neubaugasse underground stops just off the Mariahilferstraße shopping street (6th district south of the street, 7th to the north). There is a brewery called http://www.7stern.at which makes one Vienna's only two IPA's. You can hop on the U3 and be in the 3rd district in 7-8 minutes. You also have good sushi, good italian, good indian, good israeli, a couple mexican food stores and another international food store (http://www.prosi.at) plus a couple Merkur's (the better supermarket chain). I spent my 20's in this area and had a blast. http://goo.gl/maps/fwQK When you get here I will give you a tour so you can make notes. Also if you like concerts, the Stadthalle is nearby so you can just walk home after the show. We also organize a steak and NFL night some weekends at http://www.shebeen.at good times! Where you from?

Where is there an Israeli restaurant and what kind of food does it serve - diaspora or Levantine?

Also you missed Caribbean (Keke's on Amerlingstraße) and Thai (Bangkok on Neustiftgasse) and one of the best Persian places anywhere (Pars on Lerchenfelder Straße) :-P

Thank you both for the help.

Also, thanks Luvbeers for the offer of a tour when I arrive. I'll definitely take you up on that. I'm originally from Cleveland, but currently live in Atlanta.

Also running perpendicularly to the U3 is a bus line called the 13a.
http://www.wienerlinien.at/media/downlo ... _70326.pdf
It runs from the 9th to the southern train station taking you through the 4th and 5th districts. So ideally you want to live as close to Neubaugasse where the U3 and 13A intersects... or somewhere on the 13A line if not west or east on the U3.

bring me a bottle of 420 please!
