wien parkscheineThose of you who enjoy driving around Vienna and own a car might well be aware of the fact that so-called Parkscheine (pre-paid parking vouchers), are required for parking in the districts 1-9 and 20, and in the 15th district in the area between the Gürtel, Felberstraße, Johnstraße, Stutterheimstraße and Gablenzgasse. The prices for these is going up, on the other hand however, the residential parking permits will be going down in price. Those of you interested in the price difference, permitted parking duration will probably find the Vienna Online website in English very useful: http://www.wien.gv.at/english/transportation/parking/shortterm.htm

Also, never underestimate the beauty of the modern ages: one can also pay for these Parkscheine via a mobile phone, all it requires is a quick one-off online registration (http://www.handyparken.at – sorry guys, this website is in German only) and you can top up your account and pay via a simple text message (SMS) to an assigned mobile parking number OR using smart phone apps. There is no price difference between paper or text message parking vouchers, but less hassle i.e. no leaving in the middle of the meeting… no having to run out when it snows or rains… no rushing to quickly finish off that one last task before popping out…) it just makes life a lot easier. BUT if you do do the manual paper change every 2 hours (please note – this is the maximum duration for any combination of the vouchers that can be displayed in one go!) you can potentially, just here and there steal a quarter of an hour, seen as you may round off fifteen-minute periods that already started.

Here is a summary of the price increase:

So, dear VE drivers, please note – try to use up all of the Parkscheine remaining in your possession in paper form by the 29th February 2012, as they will not be valid from the 1st March 2012 onwards. There will be a possibility to exchange them for new ones by handing them in and paying up. If this is the path you wish to choose, please note: maximum amount to be exchanged in one go - 30 pcs, which can be done at:

  • The 200 Tobacconists around Vienna until 31st May 2012.
  • Ticket machines at all Vienna public transport underground stations with a manned ticket counter until 31st May 2012.

If you decide you no longer want any of them in paper form (or maybe you want to sell your car and go green?) – until the end of August 2012 one can return an unlimited amount of paper parking vouchers at the Rathaus (or exchange them for new ones by paying the difference). You can also do it by post – please send them to Stadthauptkasse (1., Rathaus, Stiege 7, Hochparterre) with your bank details including your bank sort code, account number and account name.
